🌱 Haryana Engineer Quits Job, Builds ₹45 Lakh Vermicompost Startup

In a world chasing fast-paced tech careers, Sumit Giri, an engineer from Haryana, chose a slower but more sustainable path. In 2022, he quit his corporate job to launch Urjaa Agro Farm, a startup dedicated to producing organic vermicompost — a nutrient-rich, eco-friendly fertilizer made from earthworms and biodegradable waste.
What seemed like a risky move at the time has now blossomed into a thriving green venture. Urjaa Agro Farm clocked ₹45 lakh in revenue in FY25, supplying compost to hundreds of farmers, nurseries, and organic growers.
💡 The Inspiration
Sumit saw first-hand the damage caused by chemical fertilizers to soil health and crop quality. With a vision to promote organic agriculture, he began experimenting with vermicomposting on a small scale — using kitchen waste, cow dung, and earthworms.
🌱 The Growth Journey
Starting in his hometown with minimal investment, Sumit focused on quality compost, farmer education, and building trust in rural markets. Word-of-mouth and social media helped him expand, and soon, bulk orders from nearby villages and agri-retailers began rolling in.
Today, Urjaa Agro Farm stands as a model for rural innovation — proving that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.
