Bridging the Digital Divide: Tamil Nadu to Offer High-Speed Internet at ₹200/Month

In a landmark move aimed at fostering digital equality, Tamil Nadu's IT Minister, Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, recently announced an ambitious initiative to provide high-speed internet access at just ₹200 per month. This strategic move is part of the state's broader mission to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas, ensuring that every citizen—regardless of geography—has access to digital tools, education, and opportunities.

Democratizing Digital Access

While metropolitan areas have enjoyed the benefits of fast internet and digital services, rural parts of Tamil Nadu have often been left behind. This disparity affects access to education, healthcare, e-governance, and employment opportunities. The government's new initiative, therefore, is not just about affordability—it’s about inclusion.

Under the BharatNet Phase II program, Tamil Nadu is working to connect over 12,500 gram panchayats with high-speed fiber-optic internet. These connections will support not only households but also community centers, government offices, and schools, making a wide range of services more accessible.

Focus on Education and Empowerment

One of the core pillars of this initiative is improving educational outcomes for rural students. Many students in remote villages struggle with online learning due to weak or nonexistent internet connectivity. With the new policy, government schools—especially high and higher secondary schools—will receive internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps. This is a dramatic upgrade from the current 5–6 Mbps connections.

The improved connectivity will support digital classrooms, online teaching resources, virtual labs, and interactive learning platforms—offering rural students the same opportunities as their urban peers. It is estimated that around 46 lakh students will benefit from this digital boost.

Strengthening Rural Infrastructure

In addition to laying fiber cables, the state is also investing in mobile connectivity. Over 223 mobile towers are being erected in rural areas under the Digital Bharat Nidhi scheme. With 197 already completed, these towers will address long-standing network issues and support 4G and 5G rollouts in hard-to-reach areas.

This rural internet infrastructure is expected to enable critical services like telemedicine, online banking, agricultural extension services, and more—helping rural residents engage more effectively with the digital economy.

Minister Thiaga Rajan emphasized that digital access is a fundamental right in the modern world. By setting an affordable monthly price of ₹200 for high-speed internet, the government is not just subsidizing access—it is sending a strong message: that digital empowerment is central to Tamil Nadu’s future.

This initiative aligns with the state’s vision of inclusive growth, where no community is left behind in the journey toward modernization and economic development. It also positions Tamil Nadu as a leader in progressive digital policy among Indian states.
