🛵 Chennai Cares: City Launches Lounges for Gig Workers

In a pioneering move, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has introduced dedicated rest lounges for gig workers—those delivering food, parcels, or providing ride-hailing services. These lounges are designed to offer basic comfort and dignity to workers who spend long hours navigating the city.
📍 What’s Inside the Lounge?
-
Comfortable seating area
-
Mobile charging stations
-
Clean drinking water
-
Toilet facilities
The first lounge, set up in Anna Nagar, is air-conditioned, 200 sq ft in size, and can accommodate around 25 workers at a time. More such lounges are planned across 10 key locations in Chennai, including KK Nagar and T. Nagar.
💬 “We often wait outside restaurants or in the sun with no place to rest. This lounge is a big relief,” says one delivery executive.
This initiative not only provides relief from the city's extreme weather but also reflects Chennai’s commitment to the welfare of its informal workforce. In a gig economy where flexibility comes with physical strain, this step is a model of humane urban planning.
